Summer Successes

Riverhaven is pleased to announce that we have published five books in the past ten months. Beginning with Virginia Young's first light romance Out of the Blue, set in Plymouth, MA, last August through Kathy Handley's first novel Birds of Paradise, Riverhaven is proud of our authors and what we have accomplished in a brief period of time. Donna J. Fitzgerald also published her novel If You Dare to Dream set in Hanover, MA, and Kathy Handley also published her collection a world of love and envy: short stories, flash fiction, and poetry.

Currently Virginia is preparing to publish her third light romance, The Sleepless Tide, set in Maine; her second, The Birthday Gift, was released in February and is set in Mystic, CT. And we have several other books in the queue, including several children's books. All books can be purchased through our online store. Or just click on the Featured Products on the right side of this page.

Riverhaven Books also began Writers' Work - a monthly opportunity for writers to gather, share a meal, hear a guest speaker, and have an opportunity to sell books, brag about literary accomplishments, and discuss the field. To date we have had speakers on the topics of ebooks, social media, character development, and June's guest speaker is Hank Phillippi Ryan: It's a Mystery! We'll be breaking for July and August, and in the fall we already have lined up topics and speakers for September - Pitching Your Piece - and October - Memoirs. This is truly a wonderful time to get together. Riverhaven does not make any financial profit from the evening, but it's rewarding to see books sold and people exchanging ideas. And all authors are welcome to bring their books, not just those published through Riverhaven.

Riverhaven Books is not a traditional publishing company. Quite frankly, we wish that we could be. Unfortunately, we just don't have the income currently. Perhaps someday we will be able to pay for the books to be printed; right now that's an expense the authors take on. But we have standards, and we won't publish anything that we won't proudly put our name on. We are not a print-on-demand company who does not care what they print. We don't want mistakes. We don't want anything that would be uncomfortable to read. We don't want controversial stories. We want to work with authors who have well-written stories that we are comfortable with both the quality and storyline of. So we're in between what else is offered. And hopefully that makes a difference to you, our members. Thank you so much for your support.

a world of love and envy by Kathy Handley

Set to come out in early spring, this collection of short stories, flash fiction, and poetry is a wonderful culmination of life. This blend of work speaks of truth, love, and the willingness to be bold and wear red shoes.

Kathy Handley’s readers enter her debut collection, a world of love and envy, and discover rich and unique pictures of longing and disappointment in broad landscapes from California to Boston to Ireland. The stories span decades. They are raw and real and not an imitation of reality, but a portrait of it.

Rendered in an honest voice, Kathy Handley’s style is very detailed and ultra-personal, including tiny little things that might not seem to make a difference but add to the understanding of the characters and their struggles, in essence tangential but not distracting, instead adding a whole other layer of depth and insight into the human psyche.
